The High Protein Myth Fats and carbohydrates often make the news as key players in the battle against obesity and achieving optimal health. Whether the mantra of the day is to eat less or more, these two food nutrients seem to be the main focus when one discusses weight loss and healthy lifestyles. However, protein has re-entered the scene and is being touted for weight loss and muscle building while carbohydrates are blamed for weight gain. Sound familiar? Protein builds skin, muscle, bones, hair, blood, nails, connective tissue among other things. Every cell in our body is made of the protein that we get from food. But, too much protein in the diet is an example of where too much of a good thing may not be healthful but detrimental to your health. For example, too much protein increases the workload of the kidneys and liver as well as possibly interfering with calcium absorption. High-protein diets are usually low in calories because one doesn't seem to eat the volume normally consumed. To add, focusing on one nutrient can potentially cause nutrient depletion simply because protein containing foods are missing vitamins and minerals that necessary for healthful living. You're most likely better off choosing a balanced meal over a high-protein meal or shake. High protein diets that are consumed for weight loss may not be accomplishing the goal you want. Mainly, the body store that is lost is glycogen and water. Glycogen is the body's storage form of carbohydrate and when one eats a low carbohydrate diet, the body loses its quick energy stores. To add, high protein weight loss diets promote loss of lean muscle tissue simply because the diet is so low in calories that it's used for energy instead of muscle building. What's the answer? Balance. Choose a variety of foods. Eat fewer calories than your body burns. Move It to Lose It!!!!! We'd like to hear your comments about a high protein intake.
